Stoney Calf

Kirkby Lonsdale
Sleeps 2
Bedrooms 1

This is a gem of a property, constructed in 2022 in the traditional style of the area and fitted out to a very high standard. Couples will love the views, peace and quiet, and easy access to the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, and the coast and woodland delights of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We were blown away by the fabulous views and stunning location of Stoney Calf. It has been designed to be eco-friendly (it is powered entirely by renewable energy), with large windows that flood the cottage with natural light, and it has been designed with comfort in mind. The property comprises a spacious open-plan lounge and kitchen /dining area, a bedroom with a king-size double bed, and a separate bathroom with a walk-in shower.

There is handy parking right outside the front of the property (level access to the property), which must surely be a local contender for the parking area with the best view, an EV charging point powered by renewable energy, a sheltered grassed area to the rear including a small patio area with seating for drinks al fresco, and a wooden summer house.

You will be spoilt for choice for where to walk in this area; from riverside walks in Kirkby Lonsdale to the lesser visited Barbon Fells and Dentdale, to classic walks a little further afield in the Yorkshire Dales (the famous three peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-ghent are an easy drive away), the Lake District (around 30 minutes drive), Ingleton for the waterfall walk and caves (20 minutes), and coast and woodland walks at Arnside (30 minutes). You'll be blessed with dark skies to see the stars in this peaceful countryside location, which is just a 7-minute drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and 25 minutes from the M6.

We highly recommend this property for couples looking for a rural getaway with great views!

Kirkby Lonsdale

About the location

Kirkby Lonsdale (3 miles) sits within a meander of the River Lune, 14 miles from Kendal and the Lake District, 15 miles from Lancaster city centre and just 7 miles from Ingleton.

The town of Kirkby Lonsdale is also a popular destination well known for the historic Devils Bridge, a towering three-arch stone bridge over the river Lune dating back to the 14th century. In the summer months, the river and the adjacent park are both popular for swimming, BBQ, or a picnic. On Sundays, motorbikes from far and wide gather here.

The town is steeped in history, including Salt Pie Lane, formally known as ‘Cattle Market Yard, until 1911 when a local resident of Cattle Market Yard, an entrepreneur, made hot, salted mutton pies for sale to the traders. It's said that after eating the salty pies, people felt it immediately necessary to quench their raging thirst and adjourn to the nearby ‘Green Dragon’ (now The Snooty Fox pub). What they didn’t realise was that the landlord was a relation!

Fortunately, there is still a good choice of pubs, as well as the Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery and Beer Hall, which often has live music events. In December, the Kirkby Lonsdale Christmas Market is also a big draw to visitors. There are upmarket independent shops, ideal for that special birthday or Christmas present and plenty of cafes. For the basics, there is a handy Booth's supermarket. Bus services can take you to Lancaster, the Yorkshire Dales and Kendal. The riverside walk should not be missed, with Ruskin's View over the valley giving far-reaching views to the Barbon Fells. If you are a golfer, the nearby village of Casterton has a great 9-hole course open to visitors. The country pubs in this area are well known for serving excellent, award-winning food.

There is so much to see and do in Kirkby Lonsdale and the nearby towns and villages, that you will be sure to enjoy your stay.
