Country-cottage charm is what you'll find when you arrive at Bluebell Cottage. This former farm-workers cottage on the Underley Estate near Kirkby Lonsdale has been elegantly refurbished to a high standard, leaving you wanting for nothing on your family holiday.

This is a special property that has been restored to show its original character and to add all the most modern of conveniences and comforts - how do you like the idea of a soak in the amazing clawfoot bath before relaxing in front of the logburner, or on the outdoor furniture, if it's warm?. With two spacious bedrooms, comprising a Kingsize (en-suite) and a twin, Bluebell Cottage is perfectly suited for families or perhaps friends on holiday together, and, as with all the cottages on the Underley Estate, Bluebell Cottage is dog-friendly, too.

You'll be spoilt for a choice of places to eat in nearby Kirkby Lonsdale, which is walkable (approx 1 mile); however, if you fancy stopping in, you'll have no issues cooking a hearty family meal or better yet, why not have a barbeque in the garden?

The Underley Estate benefits from approximately 1.5 miles of private water access to the picturesque River Lune, including pools such as the Broken Banks and Catamaran. Guests can try fly fishing on the River Lune, which is renowned for salmon in September and October and sea trout during the summer. Fishing is by prior arrangement; an additional fee applies and tackle can be hired on the estate.

If fishing isn't your thing, you can try clay pigeon shooting or perhaps explore one of the many walks and footpaths over the fields and through the woods. Many of the walks are only accessible to guests staying on the estate.

To make your stay that little bit more special, add a food hamper to be delivered to your cottage for your arrival.

Overall, Bluebell Cottage is a fantastic choice for a holiday, whether a relaxing stay-at-the-cottage holiday or a walking holiday with both Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks nearby.

Kirkby Lonsdale

About the location

Imagine waking up to the soft glow of morning sunlight filtering through the trees, revealing the tranquil beauty of the Lune Valley. At the heart of this serene landscape lies the Underley Estate, a hidden gem offering the perfect escape for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.

The Underlay estate dates back centuries. The first mention of the word “Underley” is in 1260, when it is believed that the Abbot of York granted Ughtred de Underlay, son of the Earl of Northumberland, “fifteen acres and one rood” of land in the town of Kirkby Lonsdale. But in more modern times, this idyllic setting provides a peaceful retreat and a gateway to some of England's most magnificent natural wonders.

Just a short, scenic drive, you'll find the charming market town of Kirkby Lonsdale. Cobbled streets and inviting shops lead to the breathtaking "Ruskin's View", although Ruskins View is currently closed to the public for land stabilisation, it is due to reopen "soon". The town is a delightful place to while away an afternoon, browsing local crafts and enjoying a delicious meal in one of many fantastic pubs, restaurants or cafes.

But the allure of Underley extends beyond its immediate surroundings. You’re perfectly positioned to explore two iconic national parks: the Lake District, with its dramatic fells and shimmering lakes, and the Yorkshire Dales, a land of rugged beauty and timeless villages.

Whether you're drawn to the challenging hikes of the fells, the quiet charm of the Dales' stone-built villages, or the gentle walks along the Lune Valley itself, Underley Estate offers the ideal base for your adventures.

Book a stay at The Old Laundry on the Underley Estate and immerse yourself in the beauty of the English countryside, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
